Loneliness is a reality for too many Business Leaders

Running a business is lonely, but Pabasso's peer advisory boards offer support, shared expertise, and action plans from 12 fellow leaders.

I read a very interesting article recently entitled ‘Loneliness is a reality for too many business leaders’ written by Deborah Bulcock, well worth a read.

It resonated with me because ‘Loneliness at the top’ is one of the many reasons Business Leaders engage with us at Pabasso - Peer Advisory Board Associates.

In the words of one of our members:

“From a business owner’s perspective, running a business is very often a lonely existence. So, where to look for advice? Some time ago, I came across Pabasso, a group of like-minded business leaders sharing problems and finding solutions on both a personal and business front.  Here’s what I’ve discovered: A genuine openness from my peers. Information is shared without restriction. Egos are left at the door. People are unassuming. It's because they all know how hard it is to maintain their businesses' performance. There’s no reinventing the wheel. Any problems are acknowledged, taken with the seriousness they deserve and listened to with empathy. Most problems have been experienced by someone else in the room, and the solutions are readily available once the challenge has been fully explored. It’s all too easy to do nothing or sweep problems under the carpet, but the Pabasso format mandates an action plan by the individual. I found this very powerful. A 121 with the chair is worth its weight in gold. Your Chair will share the benefits of his experience, offering a direct line to him should you need it. So a mentor included to boot!”

I know from my own time running my scaling Tech business that, despite having a very supportive board around me, there were many times when I would have benefited from being in a Peer Advisory Board such as we facilitate at Pabasso.

Knowing that I was regularly going to meet with my peers from non-competitive sectors in a confidential environment would have been a great benefit to me.

I knew nothing of Peer advisory boards at the time, but I did bring in an experienced NED Chairman into my business who was a great support to me. So when I sold my business, I spent several years working as an NED myself, helping other Business Leaders progress.

However, then I came across the concept of Peer Advisory Boards, which is what led me to establish Pabasso.

Rather than just having the valued experience, expertise, knowledge and contacts from ONE NED, Pabasso allows our members to benefit from the experience, expertise, knowledge, and contacts of up to TWELVE Business Leaders in each Pabasso group.

I liken it to having 12 ‘light touch’ NED's with whom to discuss challenges, issues and opportunities.

If this resonates with you and you would like to find out more about the value Business leaders of Yorkshire-based SMEs get from being part of Pabasso - Peer Advisory Board Associates, then please drop me a note at rad@pabasso.com, and we can arrange a confidential chat to see if we can help you achieve your goals.
