True leadership listens—engage deeply with colleagues to unlock insight, strengthen teams, and drive lasting business success.
A suggestion made by one of our Pabasso - Peer Advisory Board Associates members at one of our recent group meetings, when a fellow member was sharing a challenge within his business.
When we are leading an established business, it's easy to get caught up in our own thoughts and priorities. We focus on what we need to say, what we need to do, and how we can drive things forward. But in this relentless pursuit of progress, are we overlooking one of the most powerful and readily available resources within our reach?
Our colleagues.
Taking time out to truly listen to your business colleagues can be a game-changer, unlocking hidden potential, fostering stronger relationships, uncovering concerns and ultimately driving greater success for your team and the entire organisation. It's not just about hearing the words; it's about actively engaging, understanding perspectives, and valuing the insights they bring to the table.
True listening goes beyond polite nods and occasional "uh-huhs," and often involves setting dedicated and quality time aside to ensure:
- Active Engagement: Giving your full attention, minimising distractions, and showing genuine interest through eye contact and body language - put that laptop and phone away!
- Understanding Their Challenges: Asking clarifying questions to ensure you grasp the nuances of their message and the underlying rationale, and appreciating their unique experiences.
- Respectful Consideration: Valuing their opinions, even if they differ from your own, and acknowledging their contributions.
- Responding Effectively: Taking the time to process what you've heard before formulating your response, showing that their input has been considered.
- Taking Positive Action: You can expect actions to emerge from a positive listening session, so make sure you follow these up!
Adding ‘Listening’ to your skillset takes conscious effort.
So, the next time a colleague speaks, truly listen. You might be surprised by the wealth of knowledge and potential you discover, but rest assured, you will finish the session with a more motivated colleague than before.
Don't wait for a cry for help before you give your colleagues A DAMN GOOD LISTENING TO!
