Fish or Dig Bait?

Stop procrastinating—make informed decisions and move forward. Fish or dig bait? Decide, don’t delay.

You may ask yourself what this title has to do with business.

Well let me explain, it's about procrastination versus decision making.

In one of our recent Pabasso meetings, we discussed the time it is taking for new clients/customers to make buying decisions and what could be done to accelerate these decisions.

In the current market, there does seem to be more procrastination over decision-making, which doesn't help anybody.

The supplier is trying their best to help and not become a pest by continually following up on their proposals, when all they want is a decision one way or the other so that they can proceed with the project or move on and focus elsewhere.

The Client/Customer generally doesn't welcome suppliers continually chasing them for decisions, but if they make a decision one way or the other, they too can move on.

So fish or dig bait is a polite alternative to either s*** or get off the pot!

Both have the same meaning - stop procrastinating and make a decision.

However, that can often be easier said than done. If a project is a ‘discretionary spend’ then it may be easier to defer that project than proceed with it. As we say in Yorkshire, ‘If it's not brock don't fix it’. But in many cases, that is false economy because new projects bring with them cost savings and operational benefits that are lost by sticking with the same old same old.

Project fatigue was another factor we discussed in the recent Pabasso meeting for deferring decisions. Most decision makers are overwhelmed with new projects, new technology and new propositions, all of which have merit, but they can't all be done at once.

It's simply a question of prioritising those that make the biggest difference to your organisation.

Most of the very successful business leaders I have met are decisive and not afraid to make an informed and prompt decision, which gets things moving or off the table - but certainly removes distractions.

They don't necessarily always make the right decision the first time, but they do make progress.

So, are you a procrastinator or a decision maker, are you going to keep digging for bait or actually go fishing?

Are you a Business Leader, who would like to interact more with other leaders of established businesses in the region, to experience the benefits that come from the shared knowledge, expertise and experience that exists in such a group?
